Alzheimers Whanganui takes a positive approach to living with dementia. We focus on what a person is still able to do rather than what has been lost.

We are the only organisation in Whanganui, Rangitikei and Waimarino solely dedicated to making life better for all people affected by dementia -  Kia piki te ora mo nga tangata mate porewarewa.  Our Support service involves working with the person with dementia, the main carer; the extended family/whanau and the community.

Too often when a person has a diagnosis of dementia others see the dementia first.  They don't see the PERSON LIVING with dementia.

Alzheimers Whanganui aims to strengthen the family by providing an understanding of dementia, supporting the person with dementia by focusing on what they are still able to do and providing information and support to families to empower them to make the right decisions at the right time.

- Information, education, advocacy and support for both the person with dementia and the family/whanau carer/s.
- Information on accessing health and home care services and support available to families at the various stages of the disease.
- We also promote greater public awareness and understanding of dementia. Our staff are available to speak to community groups.

Alzheimers Whanganui has been supporting people affected by dementia for over 30 years, beginning in 1986 as a small, informal group of carers meeting at the hospital. Alzheimers Whanganui covers the Whanganui, Rangitikei and Waimarino region as far afield as Whanganui, Marton, Bulls, Taihape, Hunterville, Ohakune and Raetihi.

Alzheimers Whanganui is an autonomous organisation, becoming an Incorporated Society in 1990 and gaining Charities Commission registration on 23 August 2007. It is one of 21 Alzheimers organisations throughout the country who are all members of Alzheimers New Zealand and signatories to the Alzheimer's New Zealand Code of Practice. The national body and its members work to a common Mission Statement, Code of Ethics and Aims.

Te Puna Ora o Mataatua (TPOOM) is a Whanau Ora based healthcare provider in the Mataatua region. Based on the Te Poutokomanawa o Te Puna Ora framework, TPOOM aims to provide a broader vision of Maori healthcare for local whanau, working with Maori-centred data to improve health outcomes for Maori.
