Te Roopu Taurima O Manukau Trust originated from the old Mangere Hospital where many clients were institutionalised in a system that proved inappropriate and insensitive to Maori.

In August 1992, concerned employees organised hui (meetings) journeying up and down the country asking whanau what they wanted for their intellectually disabled mokopuna. It was a time consuming process, but it became clear that an independent kaupapa Maori service that identified the needs of Maori mokopuna was required.
