Love this place! Great food, great atmosphere, very authentic izakaya experience. It's great fun to sit around the bar and share some small plates and try some Japanese sake. They don't take bookings unless you have a large group so be prepared for a wait if you come on a Friday or saturday night.
What an awesome find - this is a little slice of Tokyo in the CBD. We went at the weekend and had a spot at the bar for a few beers, sashimi and some skewers. Great service, authentic, tasty fresh food and friendly atmosphere. One of the best places I have experienced for an izakaya outside of Japan - highly recommended.
Cracking place. Strong review game as seen below. Popped in to try and save a date night after a fruitless attempt to get into Milse the dessert place in Britomart. Tanukis was just perfect, had a gallon of warm sake, sat at the bar with my beautiful wife, no pressure to eat. Enjoyed watching the samurai style approach to preparing minute detail on the plates.
Tanuki has got to be the best Japanese restaurant and bar in town. From the authenticity of the restaurant and food, to the atmosphere of the downstairs bar, there's nothing to not love about this place. It's location close to the comedy clubs and theatres doesn't hurt either. Highly recommended for a good night out.
Awesome food, i loved the setting, underground, dim lights and a nice set of staff, who cater to you perfectly. i had an amazing time, the wait for the food was a bit on the long side but overall i cannot complain!
Absolutely love Tanuki's Cave, a great experience every time! I would recommend coming in through the back door (if you don't mind climbing a few flights of stairs up the outdoor fire escape) and entering through the kitchen. The chef's always have a moment to greet you before your assigned a number to wait for a space to eat. Wait times vary but it's worth it. Food is superb and you can't go without trying the cabbage and mayo. Great place for a date.
