When receiving treatment from an Osteopath you benefit from seeing a musculoskeletal specialist and the consultation will be similar to that of any registered medical practitioner. You receive a more personal and thorough treatment in a more relaxing and less stressful environment.
A detailed case history will be taken, how your symptoms began, what affects them, health problems, accidents or injuries, medications, surgeries and lifestyle habits. Your initial consultation and treatment may last up to one hour - longer than in most other clinics,
Neurological, orthopaedic, cardiovascular etc examinations may also be performed, where relevant. Osteopathic evaluation of your body's biomechanics (structure, posture and physical movements) would then conclude the examination, leading to a diagnosis.
Diagnosis, clinical findings and an appropriate treatment plan with projected recovery would be explained and discussed.
For your first consultation it is helpful if you bring with you any medical reports, X-rays or current medication.
Classical Osteopathic treatment involves assessment and often treatment of the whole body, not only the site of pain. Altered global biomechanics (posture, alignment and muscle balance) may also be involved, and pain can also refer from other areas: e.g. shoulder pain can associate with neck and upper back pain, or leg and hip pain with the pelvis and lower back.
Accordingly, please wear loose and comfortable clothing for your treatment.
Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle form of treatment. Lightly holding the head and allowing very slight changes to occur in the pulsation movement of the cerebro-spinal fluid that bathes and nourishes the brain and spinal cord, profound and far reaching changes can occur in the body's function and homeostasis.
Acupuncture can be used to treat areas of pain, and also underlying conditions and general health: e.g. headaches, energy levels, mood, sleep, stress, etc.
Points may be used away from the site of pain (e.g. points in the feet for headaches) and the selection of points can vary according to the constitution of the individual.
What makes us different?
Our experienced and professional osteopath's provides soft-tissue massage techniques to the muscles in addition to other techniques that can affect muscle tone.
The spine and other joints may be articulated gently, or released using a high velocity technique/manipulation. Most of the body's functions may depend on the muscles operating from the spinal column itself.
Michael is real humble professional - he always says: "We do a little here, few needles there, if you like..." And than it always great relief for me! He helped me completely recover my shoulder after injury and one year of chronic pain. I can climb and slackline without pain again!
Last time I arrived quite urgently with extensive neck stiffness and headache. I was in the same pain till night, but very active and full of energy actually. But in the morning I woke up completely fresh after 6hr sleep (which did not happen last 6 weeks) and with no tightness in shoulders/under shoulder blades. Your acupuncture works perfectly well for me, Michael!
When I first came to see Michael I could barely put any pressure on my left foot, which had given me severe pain for 9 months with gout-like symptoms. After a short but thorough chat about my history and symptoms, Michael proceeded to work expertly and efficiently on both my foot, and my body as a whole. I was amazed at his accurate pulse diagnosis (acupuncture) and subsequent treatment, and the proof of his expertise is that I walked out of there, equal pressure on both feet, and pain free! I highly recommend visiting Michael for a holistic and straightforward healing experience.
After injuring my back a year ago I was desperate to return to work but was unable tolerate prescribed medication due to side effects and physiotherapy due to pain. I visited Michael after finding him on the internet. From the first session I was greatly impressed with Michael's professionalism, warm friendly manner and great knowledge of the body. My pain has greatly improved along with my understanding of my back problems with Michael's help. I will continue to see Michael as required and highly recommend him to others.
A headless skeleton? Heavy ropes hanging from the wall? Only Michael Inman can get away with this sort of decor- which he does, because it rapidly becomes obvious to his clients that this academic, professionally mannered man is an avid, lifetime student of human anatomy and bio-mechanics. As a former massage therapist myself, I was immediately put at ease by Mr Inman's calm, courteous treatment manner and obvious knowledge and proficiency. I only trust a qualified osteopath with my back, and Mr Inman applies his knowledge to usefully provide relief from pain and dysfunction. A great central location, too!
Just great! Gentle touch and an incredible awareness of body & mind. Michael takes a holistic approach to body treatment. Instead of just treating a symptom as many Chiropractic or Physiotherapy practitioners do, Michael looks to correct any underlying problems or alignment issues that may be causing issues. He took the time to understand my body and help me work on correcting alignment issues which has resulted in the long term removal of back pain. Highly recommended.

I have been in 14 car accidents that have shifted my vertebrae from left to right beginning at C2 and ending at L5. I suffered from chronic sciatic pain, stiff necks, headaches, nausea, sharp shoulder pain, fatigue, and emotional imbalance due to my body being out of alignment, and having very little confidence in my ability to train, and heal myself. I was told I would suffer from the chronic, and at time debilitating pain I felt, and I'm only 21!
I came to Michael after an accident skiing which aggravated prior injuries while on holiday and have never experienced as much immediate relief. What a gift. It is apparent in the way he works that he has worked his life to gain the knowledge to work almost intuitively. I have sought therapy through chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy etc.
Michael is the only practitioner who gave me hope for my ability to heal my self, with some gentle guiding and assistance. It is clear in the way he works that his goal is to heal his patients, not keep them coming back. I am taking a new approach in life because of the knowledge passed on to me through Michael and have felt less pain the past few weeks than I have in the past four years. I will make it a goal to see Michael every time I enter Christchurch. He gave me the tools to change my life, gratitude is the only word close to what I feel for such a gifted and selfless individual. I could never thank you enough Michael!
