Don't rent from Scotties. First off when we inquired several months before our trip as to whether or not the company was inside the airport they assured us yes it was. It is in fact NOT in the Auckland airport terminal, it's located about a 5 min drive or 10-15 min walk. So when I called Scotties in the morning they said they would pick me up at the hotel they are based, it took over an hour. Once getting there the car I was promised had "brake issues" so we ended up with an older model Subaru sedan that the company admitted had "no power". We originally had order a car suitable for 4 people and 3 luggage. The car I picked up could fit 4 people, but the 3 luggage posed a potential problem (considering we got a car we did not request). I was told once the rest of my party arrived that we could swap the car out for the one we had booked. Also the car they gave me had no fuel as in the gas light was on, to placate this problem I was given $10, it cost me over $70 to fill it up. The next day the rest of my group arrived and we decide we want the car we had originally booked. So we call Scotties and explain, they assured us that was no problem. So we arrange a time for us to meet. We arrive at Scotties well before closing time and there is no new car and the man working is closing up shop. He quickly becomes irrationally upset and claims we "got an upgrade already" and that it is "not his fault our suitcases are gigantic". (They in fact are standard size for international travelers staying 2 weeks) and ultimately refuses to swap cars because "he had tickets to the concert in town and didnt have time to deal with it". To add the price we were quoted (35$ per day) was upheld, however a mandatory 15$ per day charge for "insurance" was charged at time of payment. For those arguing that this is "budget" or "what you pay for", you'd be mistaken. I've paid less and gotten more in several countries around the world. Don't waste your time, money, or energy on Scotties.
After finding out that many other car rental companies list cars online that aren't actually available (in addition to having mileage limits and tons of extra fees) we could hardly believe our luck in finding Scotties. We didn't think we'd be able to find a car, and were worried our vacation in the South Island would be ruined when Scotties helped us out.
All the guys at the office were incredibly helpful, and they talked straight to us with no salesman talk. We felt like we were borrowing a car from friends. The car we got was much nicer than we originally planned for (after Jeff left dinner and put in overtime hours to get it ready for us early) and the price was unbelievably low compared to everyone else. Scotties Rental Cars quite literally saved our trip and made the whole process of renting a car painless. I would absolutely recommend this family-owned business over Jucy or any of the other big companies.
