Cosy little Irish pub in the heart of Howick. Friendly staff with a homely feel. Tasty cheap food and a cracking pub quiz on Wednesday nights.

This pub keeps improving after new ownership sometime back, considerably friendlier than the previous. The food is good and reasonably priced and we enjoy their complimentary nibbles during happy hours on Thursday and Friday. Their loyalty card is a welcome addition as are their numerous food and beverage deals throughout the week. The only niggle is their $15 lunch special was not particulary good value on the occasion we had it.

Great local pub! Awesome service and friendly atnosohere

It had been many many years since we visited The Barrel Inn. We had heard reviews about how tired the place looked, and while this is true (same decor for 20+ years) the food, drinks & service were great on the night we visited. Friends had also told us how great it was - not sure if there has been a change of owner? Certainly a vast improvement!
Service wise everyone was incredibly friendly & welcoming with prompt delivery of food & good banter.
The food was really a stand out though which you wouldn’t necessarily expect!
We ordered the Sunday roast which at $12.00 there wasn’t huge expectations - well it was delicious! Pork shoulder (tender & perfectly cooked) crispy potatoes, and all the trimmings. There was also a larger size which a friend chose as he was hungry - it was huge.
1/2 pint at $5.90 is pretty reasonable too
So a good surprise & will definitely be back.
