General Info

Restaurant, Cellar Door, Degustation Wine Tastings, Nature Walk.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Located in the centre of Waiheke Island on an elevated site with expansive views west across the Hauraki Gulf towards Auckland City, Peacock Sky Vineyard is bordered by lush native bush and rolling pastoral land. It is also home to a large colony of wild peacocks whose exotic calls are a distinctive feature of this spectacular site. The vineyard was first established in 1999 and the first vintage was bottled in 2002. The original owners set their sights on producing the very best Bordeaux-style wine for which Waiheke Island has become famous. Accordingly, the vineyard's home block comprises almost three hectares of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Peacock Sky Vineyard is now operating under the ownership of Connie Festa and Rob Meredith, who have expanded the product range to include not just the traditional powerful and elegant reds, but also a dry, food friendly Rosé, and a lightly oaked Chardonnay, made from grapes grown on a second one hectare block now under their management. Rounding out their range is an innovative Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine made from estate grown red grapes, the Peacock Sky Blanc de Noirs. While innovation has been an important component in the recent successful growth of the business, Connie and Rob have also been careful to preserve the long standing philosophy of sustainable viticulture, with minimal use of horticultural sprays. Each of the 8,500 or so vines has an intimate relationship with the owners and much care is lavished on them! All pruning, trimming, tucking and picking operations are conducted entirely by hand, and fruit yield is carefully controlled by selective thinning. Over the past 8 years the business has gone from strength to strength, growing from a simple rustic tasting room and cellar door into a full service operation, with the attached Le Côté de la Colline restaurant serving 3 course gourmet lunches during the day and catered dinners at night. Peacock Sky's signature "degustation wine tasting" with specially designed food matches for each wine has proven to be extremely popular, and the flexibility of the property has brought in new business in the form of conferences and weddings. A variety of music concerts can be enjoyed at the vineyard throughout the summer season. Outdoor activities are a popular part of a visit to Peacock Sky, and Waiheke's famous coast to coast cross-island walking trail runs right through the property, making a visit to the tasting room or restaurant an ideal "pit stop" en route. A short one kilometre walk through lush native bush brings you to the entrance to Whakanewha regional park, with the Cascades waterfalls just a few hundred metres further on. In the opposite direction, just half a kilometre away is Waiheke's EcoZip Adventures, a popular tourist attraction combining ziplining and nature walks. Adjacent to the vineyard is Waiheke's Reeve airstrip, home to Flight Hauraki who can take you on a scenic flight around the island, or ferry you between nearby regional airports. The airstrip is also used by a number of helicopter transport companies operating shuttle flights between Waiheke and Auckland city. Many reasons to consider a visit!
