- Endoscopy is a process (diagnostic or therapeutic) where a thin flexible tube (endoscope) is used to analyse the lining of your stomach/bowel. The image is then produced via the video processor and displayed on a tv screen. Special tools are passed down the endoscope to obtain a biopsy (a tiny tissue sample) or to remove polyps. Samples are then sent to the laboratory for examination. Colonoscopy is an endoscopy of the large bowel (colon). Gastroscopy is an endoscopy of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
