- What Makes Us Different
- The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is New Zealand's first and only museum of contemporary art.
General Info
The latest addition to the Govett-Brewster - the Len Lye Centre - is New Zealand's first institution dedicated to a single artist, the pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye. With its curved exterior walls of mirror-like stainless steel, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is the country's first example of destination architecture linked to contemporary art and is one of the country's most iconic buildings. Pioneering, daring and what Len Lye called the 'swingiest art gallery in the antipodes', the Govett-Brewster is a contemporary art museum of the Pacific Rim, with an international reputation and reach. ## Gallery History Founded on a visionary exhibition and collection policy in 1970, we continue to court the radical, seek the new and provide a space for engagement and dialogue for people from all walks of life. Located in the coastal city of New Plymouth, New Zealand, where WOMAD is held each year and the mighty Mount Taranaki volcano dominates the landscape, our independence from the larger cities sets us apart and provides us a measure of freedom. A freedom and sense of self-determination keenly felt by our founder, New Plymouth-born Monica Brewster, when she dreamed of an art museum for her city. With her courage and vision, we established the museum in the city's decommissioned heritage cinema, and opened with a groundbreaking exhibition and multi-sensory installation, and continue to present innovative and provocative work by New Zealand and international artists. Experience innovative and provocative work by New Zealand and international artists, an ever-changing exhibition programme, giant kinetic works, a regular event and education programme, daily tours and a late-night on Thursdays. ## Gallery Venue Our quarterly film programme in the 62-seat Len Lye Centre Cinema plays daily, and the cinema is also a welcoming environment for audiences to experience Len Lye's films, local and international cinema, arthouse and experimental films, and regular film festival programming. Tickets available online or at the Govett-Brewster Shop. ## Art Gallery Shop For something a little different, the Govett-Brewster Shop is not your usual tat. Contemporary design and objects of inspiration, jewellery, Len Lye and Govett-Brewster merchandise, books, gift cards, kids stuff and limited edition collaborations mean you'll definitely need to add extra time to your visit. ## Art Cafe - Monica's Eatery Monica's Eatery, adjacent to the Govett-Brewster, is an international art cafe inspired by the life and spirit of Monica Brewster, a globetrotter even before the golden age of air travel and founding patron of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Open seven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Really enjoyed visiting here. We came twice because the gallery staff said to come back and watch the Len Lye kinetic structure performance, which was finished when we went the first time. Our tickets for the first day were valid for the second day which was very decent of them.

Very modern gallery, staff are approachable and know what they are talking about. Great photo opportunity outside in the mirrors and convenient to stop for a cuppa in the cafe next door

I am not an arty person, but can appreciate the thought and effort that went into presenting this artists work. Everything was presented in an uncrowded manner so that you could get an appreciation of the individual pieces. Was a tad dark in places, so not sure if that was the way the piece was intended o be presented. Great that an individual artist can have a showcase specifically for their art so that a pattern and story of their inspirations begins to develop.

Amazing building and some very cool exhibits, definitely worth a look, the Len Lye end is very sparse but what is there is interesting.

The exterior of the Len Lye Centre/Govett Brewster is inspired, and the Cathedral-like entrance to the centre took my breath away. But what followed was a little disappointing, and I feel like I needed a lot more from the experience.
