Found it was quite expensive to get in and then the place was rather run down, I understand it's suppose to have an old time feel but it just felt dirty and neglected. The young kids enjoyed the steam train and the older kids enjoy the gold panning. Was interesting stuff to look at but we wouldn't plan to go back again.

A .great place to take the family as Its really educational for the kids while being fun as well. They enjoyed panning for gold, going on the steam train and all the other fun things you can do there, while getting to see what it would have been like to live back then. It was great to see that the contributions the chinese made along with the hardships they had to endure is acknowledged

This place has so much more potential than what it currently offers which is a shame. Love the train ride and gold panning but unfortunately the shops and little township are a bit run down.

We always visit here when we are on the coast, about once a year. The staff on the steam train were great, they were both friendly and chatty. We really enjoyed doing the gold panning. The really disappointing thing was when we were paying for our admission. I asked for a free carer ticket for myself as I have a special needs child. I had to argue the fact that we did have someone with a disability in our group. Not all disabilities are visible!

We love Shantytown! Take a few hours to explore the historical goldfields village, the old township, movie theatre, Chinatown and to do the walks around the village. The steam train rides are a must, and the gold panning is fun too. Give the cafe a miss, the food is absolutely terrible, and the ladies at reception aren't very friendly, but the train drivers and gold miner are lovely and will have a good yarn with you.
