On Feb 1st 2018, on my visit to SmartPhone Repairs Palmerston North I came upon the most bizarre experience in the way that the shop owner misled, and, even more so, craftily ripped me off, big time.
Having agreed with the owner of the shop upon the charges of NZ$ 34.50 , which was the amount that she herself had requested for the installation of the antivirus that I had provided her with, I was greatly surprised, upon my return to pick up my laptop, for the almost double the charges that she had requested earlier, all under pretext of the extra time that she claimed spending on the uninstallation of the previous antivirus that had gone expired a few days prior to my visit to her shop.
Well, firstly, and from a technical point of view, I believe that she should have had the appropriate technical awareness so to necessarily discuss the matter with me and get my approval first, prior to imposing her totally unacceptable fait accompli policy, coercing me ultimately to pay the extra amount that she herself took the liberties to decide.
Moreover, the uninstallation of the old antivirus, besides being part of the overall process of the installation, is usually done in the space of minutes, meaning she must have finished the job in a much less time than that needed for the installation, yet she charged me more, claiming that she had to spend extra time on the uninstallation!
In another similar incident that had happened a few days after Christmas wherein I took my tablet to the same shop to be fixed. The technician came up with a long list of diagnosis, one of which was that the hard disk was possibly damaged, and for that he suggested that I left the tablet there for three weeks. I was reluctant to do so. Having decided, however, to wait until the return of the technician of the shop that I usually deal with, and who was away at the time, my technician did manage, nonetheless, to diagnose the problem as software related, and quickly fixed it on the spot, free of charge!
In conclusion, it seems that the shop owner has mastered playing this game, perhaps through repetition. My mistake was that I didn’t stick to my gun on paying only for what we had agreed upon. My gentlemanly manners, however, made me avoid creating a scene, and I opted, instead, for paying what she billed me for.
The worst thing that could happen to any client is when they leave a shop, trusting that they got what they paid for, only to realize afterwards that their trust was exploited in the most unethical manner. After all, money doesn’t grow on trees; people don’t earn their money so to be conned of in this disgusting manner.
I, finally, warn other clients who may possibly visit this aforementioned shop. Not only the owner tends to be dishonest and crafty, but her impolite and unwelcoming customer service attitude also seems to be much in the lacking.
