Napier Prison Tours & Audio Tours

My husband and I did the self guided audio tour one afternoon recently. There was free parking available right outside the front gate, and the prison was very easy to find and well sign posted. It was actually closer to town than we expected.

It took us 1 - 2 hours to do the whole thing, as well as pose for some fun snaps with the costumes. We were pretty thorough and listened to every number on the tour. A few of the numbers seemed to be mixed up? But we found our way through alright.
The lady who welcomed us was very friendly and seemed to enjoy her job. My husband thought it would have added to the atmosphere if she was in costume, haha. Just a thought.
I used the toilets while on site and liked the thought that I was using facilities used by the inmates, it added to the experience.
There was a family wandering around with small children, and the content of the audio tour made me glad we hadn't bought our kids with us -- I found out later that there is a child's version of the audio guide, which was a relief!

I thought the costumes available was a really fun touch, and lightened what could be quite a somber place.
I also appreciated the water to wash yourself with on the way out, as there is a spiritual aspect to being somewhere like this, where people have lost their lives.
I would recommend a visit to anyone going to Napier who is interested in local history. I liked it.

Awesome attraction to take visiting family and friends. Unusal and learn heaps about the past of the prison. Good price for a few hours entertainment. Something you will remember well after you leave.

This was such an interesting tour, we learnt so much. walking into some of the cells you get chills knowing what has happened in them. Such a cool experience really enjoyed learning about this place and its history.
