Filtering and putting "fresh clean"air into your home. Yeah, right!
You can just open a window.
Several years ago, my parents in their eighties were sold an HRV system without discussing it with their children.I didn't see the selling pitch, but I can bet it was high pressure selling.
If you turn the system off on the control panel, it automatically turns itself on in about 8 hours. In other words, they know better than you! To me that is unacceptable. There is a complicated code you have to go through to turn it off, or disconnect the power.
The name originally stood for Heat Recovery Ventilation. The problem is, when you want the heat the most, on a cold winter's night, there is none. When you don't want the heat, on a hot summers day, there is far too much. It filters the air that comes in the house, and every 2 years, there is a $200+ filter that needs to be replaced. It DOES NOT eliminate moisture buildup on the windows, it only lessens it.So what is wrong with having just a little more ventilation by opening a window?
It has summer and winter settings, but you have to change it on the control panel, something that was and is beyond my parent's understanding.
I have faulty hearing, as do my parents, so we do not hear it, but several people had noticed the sound of the fan and some it has kept them awake.
Personally, I thinks these are an expensive waste of money and I would not recommend these systems to anyone.Or talk to a person who you know who has one installed, NOT from their recommendation.
