Glendene Community Society

Our journey started over 7 years ago when Waitakere City Council saw a need for more support for the Glendene Community. Studies had shown a lack of access to necessary community and social services for residents. Tracey, a Community Development worker was brought in to connect people in the community and help drive new initiatives. With the help of Tracey, the Glendene Steering Group was formed.

Over the next 5 years the group ran many programmes to help local residents and build the community. Activities included planting a community vegetable garden and orchard, park clean-ups, running community events such as the annual Santa Run and Easter Egg Hunt, and developing groups that included the Over 50s, Mother and Baby, and Special Needs.

The Glendene Community Hub was the culmination of years of planning, consultation and collaboration with Waitakere City Council, and later the Henderson Massey local board. As the site on the corner of Hepburn Rd and Phelps Place was identified and plans were drawn up, it became clear that the informal Glendene Steering Group were going to have to become a legal entity. In September 2014 we held our first AGM, became an incorporated society and changed our name to the Glendene Community Society Inc.

Our Board officially took on the management of the Hub on 1st September, 2016, and have hired a Community Coordinator to manage the Hub, and continue the legacy started by Tracey and the Steering Group.
