About Environment Canterbury

Welcome to Environment Canterbury - we are the section of the regional council who looks after the region's air, water and land.

We are committed to the sustainable management of our environment while promoting the region's economic, social and cultural well-being.

Our services include resource and building consents, water testing, environmental services and pollution management. We also provide education and talks to school groups, community groups and landholders.

Your Region

With 42,200 square kilometers of diverse landscapes, including New Zealand's highest mountain (Aoraki/Mount Cook, 3,724 m above sea level), major lakes and river systems, and some of its most productive farmland, Canterbury is New Zealand's largest region.

The population of Canterbury is 566,000 (as of June 2013), of whom 366,000 live in Christchurch City. This makes Canterbury the most populated region in the South Island and the second most populated in New Zealand.

Your Council

Environment Canterbury is Canterbury's regional council. The regional council was formed from 33 different bodies with regional and resource management roles in November 1989.

Environment Canterbury is currently governed by seven commissioners, following a government review of the organisation in 2009.

The commissioners are required to improve relations with Canterbury's 10 territorial councils, to build on the work of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy and to meet all the statutory obligations of the Resource Management and Local Government Acts to consult with the Canterbury community.
