Another trailer story. I discovered the shackle from the safety chain had fallen off, so asked at the garage if they had one for sale. They didn't, but the man serving me found the one that they used for their business and charged me only $5 for it. A wonderful generous attitude when I was at his mercy and he could have refused to sell it to me or charged what he liked.
An oasis of assistance in your hour of need. While towing a trailer south VERY late at night, the trailer lost it's locking pin and detached from the towball, dragging along on the safety chain. Tore the electrical plug off the cable and left me with a trailer illegal and unsafe to tow at night without some spare parts.
I was within sight of this place, and could see lights on, so I wandered over and asked for assistance. I got given a replacement locking bolt and access to some tools to do repairs... enough to get the trailer safely reattached - securely - and do enough of a repair job on the plug to get the lights running again. (I used an old soda can I found on the side of the road to build temporary pins to replace the ones that couldn't be repaired.)
The willingness of the owner to help out a total stranger at 2am was beyond a relief. I will never forget his kindness and sheer humanity.
