We have come into this cafe over the years from time to time. I returned this time because in the not so distant past the chowder was the best we had ever had. Unfortunately the recipe has changed and a new name could be ‘potato chowder’ - the seafood was minimal and obviously the potato was prolific. My friend had blue cod with salad, the amount of blue cod was on the small side compared with what we had had at the other two leading eateries in Port Chalmers over the previous 2 days, also the side salad consisted of large chewey leaves of an unfamiliar variety. Sorry am not more positive but was disappointing when I had ‘talked this cafe up’ to my friend and was looking forward to a nice lunch. Cafe was busy and had a nice vibe.

I really enjoyed having lunch at the 1981. The server we had was experienced and very professional. The wait was worth it and food was delicious, as we were expecting. They also have irresistible deserts.

We had a great time having lunch here. The food came out very fast and the food tasted great! Awesome presentation and the pricing wasn’t too bad either. Staff were friendly and professional. I would come back
