Ian was raised in Auckland, and completed his first degree in dentistry at the University of Otago in 1993. He then spent several years working in Auckland Hospitals before completing his medical degree and masters in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2002.

He extended his training by working in both Christchurch and Auckland and was awarded the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, achieving the medal for the highest mark in the final exam through out New Zealand and Australia.

Ian has since worked as a consultant at the Auckland Hospitals as well as working in private practice in both Auckland and Christchurch.
