Skycam New Zealand has been operating in the South Island since 1993. Peter Ball's contact with Galtech Models, a leading model aviation company in the North Island who's off-shoot Skycam New Zealand Ltd. had developed a radio-controlled camera system, was the catalyst that brought together a combination of two deep interests, photography and radio-controlled helicopters. What began as an R.C. helicopter only service diversified four years ago to aerial photography conducted from conventional aircraft. Most verticals, all photo mosaics and scale photographs are taken this way. While most of our work comes from the Canterbury region, we travel South Island wide with commissioned work coming from as far afield as Bluff, The West Coast, and Nelson.
While photographing a single commercial or residential site within city boundaries would be difficult with conventional aircraft, the radio-controlled helicopter makes the ideal camera platform with a typical operating range of 4m - 150m above ground level. Operation within confined areas, around trees, power lines and buildings are all in day's work for the helicopter. Roadsides, driveways and lawns are frequently our launching and landing sites. Civil Aviation approval and liaison with Air Traffic Control as necessary allows us to operate this equipment legally within city boundaries.
For work 300 metres (1000 feet) and above, conventional fixed-wing aircraft or helicopters are employed. While oblique photography makes up a large percentage of our work, VERTICAL photography, to SCALE if requested, and photo mosaics (overlapping photographs) are parts of our service.
Whether you need photographs only a few metres above the ground or looking down at the summit of Mt Cook, Skycam New Zealand has the resources to produce the images you need.
